Description

On application of organic EL diode to flat panel display, there are three key issues to be considered: 1)stability (lifetime), 2)full coloring, 3)driving method. Conceming the lifetime, development of high Tg organic materials and use of a proper structure (ITO buffer layer and doping emitter layer) result in good performance: half decay time >1O,OOO hours at the initial luminance of 100cd/m^2. To realize full color organic EL display, we have already proposed a device with a blue, green and red emitting layer, which exhibited a white emission. Another approach of getting white emission is designing a new emitter material that shows white emission, which seems to have advantage of simplifying the device structure. The lastl issue strongly depends on application target; both simple matrix and active matrix method are possible, although there are two problems to be overcome in simple matrix scheme: patterning of cathode and increase of current density at a low duty operation.
