MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small ≈22-nucleotide noncoding RNAs that are present from plants to animals and are known to exhibit a wide range of biological activities. There are >700 miRNAs in human, and that accounts for ≈4% of all the expressed transcripts. It is estimated that a single miRNA controls up to a hundred distinctive target genes. It is also estimated that approximately one third of all animal genes are controlled by miRNAs, and thus all the organs are thought to be influenced by miRNAs.1 The vascular system is not exceptional; miRNA-126, miRNA-218, members of the miRNA17≈92 cluster, and miRNA-10a/10b are reported to be involved in the regulation of endothelial cell (EC) biology,2–5 whereas miRNA-143/145 is reported to be involved in the regulation of smooth muscle cell biology.6 See accompanying article on page 533 MiRNAs are encoded in the intergenic region, as well as in the exons …
