Description
Abstract Amber mutants of bacteriophage T7, growth of which depends on Escherichia coli DNA-binding protein, were isolated. In addition to a mutant in the gene of T7 DNA-binding protein (gene 2.5 ), they could be classified into six groups: mutants in the genes of T7 RNA polymerase (gene 1 ), T7 endonuclease I (gene 3 ), T7 lysozyme (gene 3.5 ), tail protein (gene 12 ), and head proteins (genes 14 and 16 ). These mutants synthesized almost normal or slightly lower molecular weight protein than the respective wild-type protein in the absence of suppressors.
