Unexpected rubber-like behaviour is revealed in the ferroelastic low temperature phase of RNbO_4 crystals. Their stress-strain hysteresis curves show the characteristic that the higher the temperature and the longer the time required for the forward motion, the lower are the stresses at the backward motion. These results are explained by the non-co-operative activation process of the atomic shuffles in twinning or reverse-shuffles in detwinning. Consequently, it is recognized that some Martensitic phases may be in intimate relations with the ferroelastic phases of dielectric crystals.
