Nonlinear behavior of resistive pressure driven modes in stellarator/heliotron plasmas with vacuum magnetic islands

The effects of vacuum magnetic islands (VMI) on the growth of magnetic islands driven by resistive pressure driven instabilities in stellaroator/helitron plasmas were discussed. The study was carried out by using the three dimensional nonlinear time-resolution simulations for cylindrical plasmas. The simulation code was based on magnetohydrodynamics equations and the equations were discretized by the finite element method and fourier expansion in the toroidal direction. It was found that the growth of magnetic island in a plasma can be controlled by an external perturbational magnetic field that generates VMIs.
