A Computerized Teaching Assistant for English Learners to Develop Accuracy and/or Enhance Communication in an Online Chat Session

Abstract

In order to raise learners' awareness of their use of English and lead them to exchange more specific information in an online chat session, Language Education Chat System is equipped with a computerized teaching assistant, word frequency and collocation lists. In this paper, the author investigates Japanese university students' chat sessions and shows some proofs of the three positive elements of output Swain (1994) suggested: noticing, hypothesis testing, and reflective feedback.
