Abstract

There is a need to improve students’“Fundamental Competencies for Working Persons,” suggested by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry in Japan in higher education. Over the past few years, authors have been using the Problem-Based-Learning approach in Career Design II, which is a mandatory course for sophomores of Kyushu Women’s University. Based on the results from two surveys, which were conducted prior to and after the Problem-Based-Learning, we found that mean scores for 16 items out of all 36 items were statistically significantly higher at the second survey, compared to the first survey. Specifically, there weresignificant mean differences in two surveys on the abilities to identify problems, have a sense of independence, make plans, and communicate effectively. These abilities are related to our Problem-Based-Learning activities, and we believe that they were effective to improve students’“Fundamental Competencies for Working Persons.” We are going to apply the survey results to improve course activities in the future.
