This study analyzed the job hunting process of a student with a tendency toward self-oriented perfectionism and examined the useful support methods in university career support centers. Self-oriented perfectionism has both positive and negative affects; here, I focused on the negative affect of gathering excessive information, which is observed to lead to poorer performance. We analyzed the job hunting process based on recorded contents with a male university student with obsessive-compulsive disorder, which is strongly correlated with perfectionism. Results showed that both positive and negative cognitive processes were confirmed in self-oriented perfectionism. In addition, support centers intervened in the cognition of "setting high personal standards," which originates from self-oriented perfectionism, suggesting the need for a close examination of setting a goal. Such interventions suppress the perception of "concern over mistakes," and this is expected to lead to a reduction of resulting depression and self-harm. Furthermore, intervention was also suggested to potentially lead to positive cognitive processes in the "pursuit of perfection" which arises from "setting high personal standards."
