The residual stresses due to oil-quenching, water-quenching and each of these followed by subzero-quenching were measured by Heyn's method on Mn steel, Mn-Cr steel and bearing steel of 5 mm φ cylinder. The changes of stresses due to tempering of these specimens were also measured. It is noticeable that the change of residual stress by subzero-quenching is little, though the hardness increases markedly.
