For the purpose of clarifying the roasting mechanism of pyrite ore, its thermal dissociation was investigated. The equilibrium in the reduction of natural pyrite powder with hydrogen was measured by means of the flow method. The results obtained are as follows : FeS_2+H_2=FeS(in FeS_2)+H_2S ; K_p=pH_2S/pH_2. [numerical formula], (213?262℃) FeS_2(s.s)+H_2=FeS(s.s)+H_2S ; K'_p=pH_2S/pH_2,[numerical formula]. (340?388℃) Combining these equations with the known ones for the equilibrium constant of dissociation of hydrogen sulphide gas, the following equations representing the correlation of the equilibrium dissociation pressure of pyrite with temperature were obtained : 2FeS_2=2FeS(in FeS_2)+S_2 ; [numerical formula] (213?262℃) 2FeS_2(s.s)=2FeS(s.s)+S_2 ; [numerical formula] (340?388℃) The decomposition temperature of pyrite was determined to be 579℃ from the above equation. Basing on the above results and those of chemical and X-ray analyses with respect to the products reduced with hydrogen, some considerations were given on the dissociation mechanism of pyrite.
