- <Original Papers>A Study of the TiNi Intracranial Aneurysm Clip Having the Shape Memory Effect
Intracranial aneurysm clip is required to be readily applied and removed. The authors have tried to prepare various types of clip of TiNi (Nitinol) having the shape memory effect. TiNi is a little higher in hardness for its use as the material for intracranial aneurysm clip. In order to make up for this defect, several heat treatments were carried out. Vickers hardness of the TiNi specimen was decreased from Hv 253 to 204 by keeping the specimen for 1h at 700℃ and cooling in the furnace. Four types of TiNi clip were made and their mechanical performance was investigated. The V-type clip cracked at the point of inflection in the bending test. The pin-type clip could not fully occlude the silicon tube as an imitative blood vessel because of its superelasticity. The Yasargil-type clip could not be readily applied to the tube. It was found that the Ag, TiNi wire composite-type clip met all mechanical conditions for practical use and it was removed easily only by local heating.
