The aim of this research was to obtain fundamental data in order to discuss how the exercise prescription for the general public would work effectively in the case of physically handicapped persons. First, we examined the impairments of the handicapped subjects and, next examined their activities of daily life (ADL). In addition, to understand the physical states of the subjects, continuous recordings of heart rates during a whole day and analysis of the frequency of heart rates were performed. Times of falling sleep of the subjects had the tendency to be later than the general public. In addition, bathing times and eating times of the subjects were diverse depending on the impairment levels and degrees of the individuals. Even if the subjects were living in wheelchairs, their average heart rates per day were not significantly different compared with those of general adults. However, the average heart rates of the subjects at the time of sleep showed higher tendency compared with those of general adults. Our studies suggested that it was necessary to create different guidelines of exercise prescription for physically handicapped persons from those for the general public.
