Amorphization of D0_<19> Intermetallics by Hydrogenation
Structural changes of titanium based D0_<19> intermetallics, i.e. Ti_3Ga, Ti_3In, Ti_3Sn and Ti_3Al caused by hydrogenation were studied by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Ti_3Ga and Ti_3In amorphize by hydrogenation, while Ti_3Al and Ti_3Sn absorb hydrogen in the crystalline state. However, Ti_3Al alloyed with Zr or Hf amorphize by hydrogenation. Crystallization and hydrogen desorption behaviors of the amorphous alloys prepared by hydrogenation were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and hydrogen analysis. The mechanism and the factor controlling amorphization of the D0_<19> intermetallics by hydrogenation are discussed.
