The activity of arsenic in the liquid copper-iron-sulfur mattes was measured by the isopiestic method over the temperature range, 1000 to 1115℃, and the concentration range of arsenic, N_<As>=0.003 to 0.06. The measurements were carried out for five different copper grade mattes corresponding to the Cu_2S-FeS pseudo-binary system (A-type), and for the other two sulfur-deficit mattes in which the values of iron activity were substantial (B-type). The activity of arsenic in the A-type mattes represents a large, positive deviation from Raoultian behavior, and the values of the activity coefficient at infinite dilution range from 7.7 to 22.0 at 1100℃, according to the matte compositions. On the other hand, the activity of arsenic in the B-type mattes represents a slight, positive deviation from Raoultian behavior when N_<As> is less than 0.01,but it increases drastically in the high concentration range of arsenic. By taking account of the iron activity in the mattes, the anomalies observed in the A- and B-type mattes can be explained reasonably. Based on the activity coefficient data determined in this work, the elimination of arsenic from the mattes in copper smelting processes is discussed.
