In order to clarify the effects of Pd substitution for Ni on the martensitic transformation in TiNi alloy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and optical microscopic studies have been performed on Ti_<50>Ni_<50-X>Pd_X alloys. Ti_<50>Ni_<50-X>Pd_X alloys were divided into three groups with respect to structure of martensitic phase and Pd-concentration dependence of transformation temperature. The first group of alloys containing less than 5mol% Pd with a monoclinic martensite lowered the transformation temperature rapidly with an increase of the Pd-concentration. On the contrary, the second group containing between 5mol% and 12mol% Pd with an orthorhombic martensite raised the temperature slightly with an increase of Pd-concentration. The last group containing more than 15mol% Pd with an orthorhombic martensite raised the temperature linearly with an increase of Pd concentration according to the equation Ms'/K=96+14.51×(X_<Pd>/mol%). The alloys containing more than 15mol% Pd showed shape memory effect and were useful for high temperature shape memory material.
