Thermodynamic Studies on the α-γ Transformation of Iron Alloys

A thermodynamic consideration was made of the shape of γ-field in the phase diagram of iron alloys. The atomic fraction of solute, x_B, in the so-called allotropic phase boundary is given by x_B={ΔF_B-ΔF_A+Δ_w±√<(ΔF_B-ΔF_A+Δ_w)^2+4ΔwΔF_A>}/2Δ_W, where ΔF_A and ΔF_B are the energy differences between γ- and α-phase for pure Fe and pure solute, respectively, and Δw is the difference in interchange energy between γ- and α-alloy. The shape of the allotropic phase boundary was determined by the two parameters, ΔF_B and Δw. The theory was applied to Fe-Cr, Fe-Ti and Fe-Co system, and consistencies with experimental diagrams were obtained with regard to Fe-Cr and Fe-Co system. For Fe-Ti system, however, extremely high values of ΔF_B and ΔW are required to interpret the experimental γ-loop.
