- The influence of the interaction with international students : Case studies of two Japanese students who belong to an international exchange group
This paper analyzes the cases of two students JA and JB, who belong to an international exchange group, focusing on the influence of the interaction with international students (IS) and the activities of the group. This study is based on PAC analysis. In case of JA, the following things are to be found. Interaction with IS opens JA’s mind gradually because they are much more frank than Japanese students. JA can make deep relationships with IS and JA is getting more interested in their cultures. However, cultural differences sometimes seem difficult to accept for JA. JA would like to deal with it by studying and knowing the culture more. In case of JB, the following are findings. JB is enjoying leaning about the cultural differences among various countries and places. They are the most interesting topics to talk about and get to know each other for JB. After entering the group, JB found that there was a gap between the image of international exchange and the reality. JB wants to correct the wrong stereotypes but they persist. JB also realizes there are several things to be careful of when interacting with IS. For example, religious matters and political matters. Analyzing the cases of the two students, two factors were found that lead the students to continue their activities. One factor motivates them and the other leads them consider some international differences, of which a few are negative.
