Some researchers (e.g., Alderson, 1984; Nation & Coady, 1988; Laufer, 1992; Haynes, 1993) have shown the intimate relationship between L2/FL vocabulary knowledge and L2/FL reading. On the other hand, other researchers suggest that grammar knowledge plays an important role in L2/FL reading. Leaver, Ehrman & Shekhtman (2005) and Grabe & Fredricka (2011) assert that to be able to read well, we need to know a lot of words, and that we also need to know the grammatical rules. In this paper, we will examine the relationship among EFL reading, vocabulary knowledge and grammar knowledge in terms of the threshold hypothesis.
