The purpose of this paper is to use Rasch analyses to examine the 2009 version of a writing rubric developed by the JACET Kansai working group and provide feedback regarding its performance under field-testing conditions. Raters (N = 13) applied the rubric to 12 essays. Fit statistics indicate the ratersare inconsistent in their use of the rubric. Reasons for this are discussed and suggestions for the further development of a consistently applicable rubric are noted.
