We analyzed reports written by student nurses in order to determine whether they could learn nursing care fundamentals through visiting an institution for severely handicapped children. Many of the students reports indicated that they could easily understand the nature of the handicaps these children suffer from as well as the care methods, attitudes, and roles required when working with the children. On the other hand, they reported difficulty in understanding the relationships between the child and family and/or society. Based on this analysis, We recommend mandatory visits to this kind of institution to help students fully understand their course contents and lectures before they begin clinical training at a hospital.
