抄録

The story of "Uji Jujo", the Tale of Genji, is composed with the thought that there should not be children in the household, which typically represents the conception of "ie" and the sense of "haji" of the Heian era. It is possible to read into the story the mental attitude of the prince Hachinomiya and his daughters who tried to live with great pride without giving in to the sense of value shared by the common people, stubbornly resisting their collaspsing social status. Indeed, the story of Uji Jujo is a reflection of the mental life of the Imperial Household that was falling apart, which can be best accounted for by the Heian conception of "ie" and sense of "haji".
