The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of alcoholic beverages in the age of the incipient consumer culture in the first full-length novel of Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises. Hemingway utilizes liquors frequently and closely as media to bridge the charcters in the novel and the society they belong to. Of them, in this paper, the protagonist Jake Barnes will be especially focused on. Though he appears to enjoy the mass-consumpion society, it may not be always true of him. I would like to examine how Jake lives through the full-of-consumption age by immersing himself in alcohol.
