- On the Influence of Bottom Matters upon the Inhabillity of Corbicula sandai REINHARDT in Seta River, Shiga Pref. (Ⅲ)
type:Departmental Bulletin Paper
On the bases of both the culture experiments of Corbicula sandai and thechemical analysis of water and bottom matters in the Seta River, which was made more than a few years ago, the authors(1-2)and Prof.Hayashi. (3) demonstrated that the Otsu City Side has more uninhabitable circumstances to the existence of the mussels than the Setacho Side. They have been of the same opinions in expressing why the former side is worse than the latter side, believing it to be due to the water tainted by the drain from certain factories for a long time and the products formed by the biochemical decomposition, especially in summer, of organic materials on the bottom. In 1960, the authors published a distribution map of the mussels in the Seta River. After that a reclaiming work, dredging operations, and a bridging work of the Meishin Highway have been in progress one after another. Consequently, the authors were forced to reexamine whether the mussels areon the decrease or not. Then, by using the same procedure as the previous report the reinvestigation of the mussel distribution was pursued. Moreover, in order to observe how much the water is tainted values of dissolvid oxygen and chemical oxygen demand, and amount of iodine consumption were measured.
