This report introduces the Fluid Engineering Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Nippon Institute of Technology. In this laboratory, fundamental and applied studies on energy conversions and environmental protection technologies using functional fluids are performed. This report first mentions a brief history of the laboratory. Next, an overview of fluid mechanics and fluid engineering are given. This overview includes the undergraduate courses in fluid mechanics and functional fluid engineering which are the main subjects studied in this laboratory. Then, an outline of the laboratory is explained. Finally, the research background of ferrofluids is described as well as one of the related research topics, “Removal of diesel particulate matters using plasma-ferrofluid filter." The principle of this filter and some results are presented.
