Research Abstract

The author has investigated how the technical terms of European chemistry were translated into Japanese, and has found out the following facts : 1.The Dutch word chemie or scheikunde, which corresponds to "chemistry" was in the first stage variously translated as rentanjutsu 煉丹術・syourenjutsu 銷錬術(in Harumawage in 1796), seirenjutsu 製煉術(by Udagawa Genzui in 1798), renkinjutsu 錬金術(in Yakken), bunrijutsu 分離術(in Orandazii), yobunjutsu 鎔分術(by Hashimoto Sokichi), bunsekijutsu 分析術(by Aochi Rinsou). 2.The original Dutch text of Nyushi Inpu紐氏韻府in Seimi Kaiso is Algemeen Woordenboek van Kunsten en Wetenschappen, a Dutch encyclopedia in 8 volumes in 1820-1829 compiled by Gt.Nieuwenhuis. 3.The abridged description of H.Davy's discoveries of potassium and sodium by electrolysis with the voltaic pile in 1807 is seen in Seimi Kaiso, where the description originated from the volume "(N-Q)" of the Nieuwenhuis's Encyclopedia in 1825. 4.Udagawa Yoan accurately introduced the concept of the poles voltaic pile before Faraday's idea (1833) into Japan in Seimi Kaiso. 5.Udagawa Yoan found the item of "Atoom" in Nieuwenhuis's Encyclopedia, and transcribed, it for his manuscript, translating part of the description. 6.One of the originals of Kagaku Nyumon化学入門(1867-73) was R.Fresenius, Leerboek der Scheikunde, door F.A.Enklaar(1852).
