Research Abstract

1899～1936年サモアでは、断続的にマウ運動と呼ばれる反統治運動が起こった。当時のサモアには、欧米人、太平洋諸島民、華僑、ハーフなど様々な人々がいた。最終的に8割以上の現地住民がマウ運動に参加したとされる。 これまでのマウ運動の研究成果には、2つの問題が指摘されている。1つは、運動を考察する視点が運動の主導者に偏りがちなことである。もう1つはサモアと海外地域との連関が分かりづらいことである。 これらの問題を解決するために、本研究では、運動の過程で現地住民が外国の政府や諸組織に提出をした嘆願書を用いて、マウ運動に参加した現地住民の立場の違いや海外地域との連関を把握する。
