Research Abstract
地球のマントルや内核には異方性が存在するが、外核も東西半球で非対称に対流している（異方性が存在する）可能性が指摘されている。しかし、外核は液体金属であるため地震波による外核対流異方性の検出は難しい。そこで本研究では地磁気強度の変動周期に着目する。その理由は、外核対流に異方性が存在する場合、地域ごとに地磁気強度の変動周期に差が現れると考えられるためである。本研究では、日本の考古遺物から1000年以上の時間をカバーする過去の地磁気強度(古地磁気強度)の変動を復元する。その変動周期を他地域のものとグローバルに比較することによって、東西半球における外核対流異方性の検証を行う。
