日本文化は、激しい外圧とじっくりとした内燃（著しく外国の影響を受けた外圧の時期と、後世「日本的」と形容される特質を醸成するいわば内燃の時期）を繰り返しながら形成されてきた。後者の代表が室町文化・江戸文化である。従来、江戸時代の文化史的区分は、元禄期（17世紀後半～18世紀初期）を中心とする前期と文化文政期（19世紀前半）を中心とする後期の二分法が行われ、18世紀（1720年代～89年＝享保～宝暦～天明）は２つの文化の谷間と捉えられてきた。本論はこの谷間の時期＝享保～宝暦～天明期を上方文化と江戸文化が融合する、いわば江戸文化のピークと捉え、その転換点を明暦の大火後の都市造りに求めた。そして、江戸が城下町ではなく、巨大都市に発展しながら、独特の精神的価値基準を有する江戸の町人社会が形成されていったことに照準し、江戸時代の前半と後半の幕府政治・経済社会構造の根本的相違を俯瞰しながら、江戸時代にまつわる誤解を提起・修正した。

It has been recognized that one division of cultural history is in the Genroku period; from a later half of the 17th century to the early 18th century and the other division of cultured the Bunka-Bunsei period; the first 19th century. And little attention has been given to the declination of the 18th century about the cultural history in Edo era. In this paper, I’d like to explore the importance of the 18th century about the cultural history in Edo era. I’ll focus my attention on the construction of the city of Edo before and after the Great Fire during the Meireki period in Edo era.
