奈良市平城宮跡におけるツバメ(Hirundo rustica) の集団ねぐら利用の季節変動とツバメの白化個体の観察を2012年から2017年に行った。2012年から2017年のツバメの集団ねぐらにおいてねぐら入りで観察した延べツバメ羽数は13,873,645羽で、年あたりの最大総個体数の概算の合計は280,000羽であり、6年間に延べ12回、4例のツバメの白化個体をねぐら入りで観察したことから、ツバメの白化個体の観察頻度は8.6×10-7～1.4×10-5と推定された。また、平城宮跡では春ねぐらにツバメの白化個体は観察されたことがなく、夏秋ねぐら形成時の終盤に見られた。このことから、本調査で見られたツバメの白化個体は日本へ渡って来た個体ではないと推測され、日本で生まれて渡りの途中で平城宮跡の集団ねぐらに立ち寄っていると考えられた。ツバメの白化個体を天然の標識として観察したところ、ツバメの白化個体は連日ほぼ同じ位置で就塒していたことから、他のツバメでも同様にねぐら入りする位置はねぐら内でだいたい決まっていると推測された。さらに、2015年9月12日に名張市でアルビノのツバメが観察され、今度は9月15日と16日に平城宮跡でも白化個体が観察できたことから、この間に同一の白化個体が名張市(三重県)から平城宮跡に飛来したと推測される。渡りの時期には東からやって来たツバメは数日滞在してすぐに渡去してしまうのだろう。We conducted monitoring of the communal roost of the barn swallow’ s (Hirundo rustica) population and observation of albinism of barn swallows in Nara Palace Site of Nara City, Japan from 2012 to 2017. The total number of swallows counted and the summation of the maximum number of total swallows in each year from 2012 to 2017 at the communal roost was 13, 873,645 and 280,000 birds, respectively. We observed four albino swallows 12 times in 6 years in total. Assuming from this observation, we calculated the frequency of albinism of barn swallows as follows: 8.6×10-7 to 1.4×10-5. At the Nara Palace Site, albinism of barn swallow was not observed in spring, and was observed at the end of summer-autumn roost formation periods. Therefore, this led us to an assumption that those albino barn swallows were not individuals that had migrated to Japan but were born in Japan and dropped by at the Nara Palace Site on their way to migration. Albinism of barn swallows being observed as a natural marker, it is presumed that swallows other than albinos sleep at the same position of the roost as well every day because albino barn swallows were observed to sleep at almost the same position of the roost every day. In addition, on September 12, 2015 one albino barn swallow was observed in Nabari City (Mie Prefecture), and another at the Nara Palace Site on September 15 and 16. Those are assumed to be the same individual. We speculated that migratory swallows that came from the east make a short stop for a few days and go on their trip, then.
