Abstract

Since the period of rapid economic growth, especially after the G5' s Plaza Accord in 1985,t he levels of FDI (foreign direct investment) of the Japanese food industry have significantly increased. However, as the principal objective of FDI is to buy or produce agricultural and other processed foods,t hen export to Japan, taking advantage of the gap in resource prices,it can be argued that the increase in FDI has actually contributed to the decline of Japanese self-sufficiency in food supply But since the new century began, the Japanese population has begun to decline, and food markets have begun to reduce in size. Meanwhile, the neighboring Asian countries, especially China, have been experiencing rapid economic growth. For many Japanese food companies, this situation will provide good business opportunities, and a number of structural changes will be needed in the FDI of the Japanese Food Industry In this paper,w e will first conduct a brief review of the transformation of nature of the FDI being carried out around the world by the Japanese food industry Then we will be focusing on China,t he country that has attracted the largest amount of FDI by Japanese food companies, and discuss the following three issues: the quantitative change, geographical distribution, and changes of the capital rate occupied by Japanese FDI in the concerned local food corporations. Finally, we will introduce a case study of two Japanese food companies located in Shanghai,in order to examine the history and the current condition of their FDI businesses there, and the problems they have faced and their future businesses prospects.
