Description

[Abstract]The flying disc meet for individual events has recently been on the decline, although it was very popular. This study investigates how many athletes participated in each of all of the ten events each year from 1977 to 2002 in order to throw light on causes of the decline. It considers why some events had a large number of participants and why others had a small number of participants from a viewpoint of the management of the meet and the activities by the flying-disc association. Despite of the present situation of individual events, the ultimate (team event) has been vigorous. As a matter of fact, a lot of efforts have been made in guidance and instruction for college players so as to spread this event. As a result, now they take the initiative in it. The ultimate event has a great merit : a meet for this event will be easy to manage if we can prepare a large field where a lot of matches can be held at the same time. On the other hand, individual events have a demerit : to manage a meet for individual events, we need many people's help and goods for each event. Thus, this is one of the factors that prevent college athletes from participating in individual events. To gain the stable number of participants, each prefecture's flying-disc association must manage a small scale meet for each individual event and let people know about individual events.
