Abstract

This paper aims to clarify what Max Weber learned from Dowden’s Puritan and Anglican in writing The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. Through Dowden, Weber came to know the Puritan literature of Baxter, Bunyan and others, and discovered the Puritan faith and feeling of Pilgrim’s Progress. Weber realized the impact of the doctrine of predestination on the solitary human soul. Dowden’s comparison of the Pilgrim and Robinson Crusoe suggested to Weber the transformation of the Puritan Character to Economical Man.
