Abstract

The paper aims to clarify Richard Baxter’s view of the economic oppressions of his day. As a Puritan casuist Baxter dealt with economic problems such as master servant relations and landlord-tenant relations. In contrast to servants who were free to change their masters, tenants faced a more serious situation. Those tenant who failed to keep up with the market economy came to be in a critical situation due to the raising of their rent. Baxter urged landlords to pay attention to the customary right to rent and to reduce it to two thirds. He believed that the rule of the market should be tempered with charity.
