Abstract
Chitinases are divided into Family18 and Family19 according to their amino acid sequence. The catalytic and substrate binding mechanisms of Family18 and Family19 chitinases are different from each other. The chitosanases classified as Family46 have catalytic and substrate binding mechanisms similar to those of Family19 chitinases, whereas a distinct difference is found in substrate recognition between these enzyme families. Nevertheless, it should be noted that a topology of the secondary structure in the substrate binding cleft of Family 19 chitinases is similar to that of Family46 chitosanase. In order to put forward basic and advanced works on the chitinolytic enzymes, it is important to be familiar with such a similarity and diversity of these enzyme families.
