[Abstract] The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the state of today's evaluation system for early childhood education in Japan. Early childhood education in Japan includes kindergartens controlled by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and day-care centers as a service of child welfare controlled by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Regardless of the difference in administration, each evaluation system has differences and similarities in idea and purpose. The purposes of ‘improvement of the quality of education’and ‘accountability to parents’ are the similarities while on the other hand, the method for evaluation is different.  Both systems are supported by the‘right’ idea of ‘improvement the quality of early childhood education’ or ‘accountability to parents’. But in today's trend of structural reform in early childhood education, such an evaluation system could be an obstacle for the people working in the field. It is desirable to practice evaluation appropriate to them and to the children's benefit. [
