[Abstract] This article reports the developmental process and problems of learning to write English essays by demonstrating and analyzing several sample essays from students placed in a middle-level class on the basis of their scores on a placement test taken prior to the beginning of the course. In general, students' essays showed a gradual improvement in the length, variation in structure, and cohesion of sentences. However, it seems that some students failed to develop their knowledge and skills to write accurately. A lack of very basic knowledge about English sentence structure was detected in the essays written by these students at the end of the semester. In summary, although there is much room for further improvement, especially in terms of accuracy, many students showed improvement in their ability to organize their points clearly and appropriately in essays consisting of several paragraphs in English.
