Abstract

The space of architecture exists, essentialy, in three dimensions. The first dimension is to protect physical existence of a man. The second is to materialize social relationship of people in form, and the third is to relate a human being to transcendental being. This paper is to discuss how these three dimensions of architecture have been expressed and developed in the history of Christian architecture, referring historical examples since early Christian through medieval, renaissance and reformation period and up to contemporary. At the end, transformation of the architectural concepts in the design process of the Seigakuin University chapel is reviewed in terms of these three dimensions.
