Abstract

[Abstract] Based upon research on the dakkatsu-kanshitsu (hollow dry lacquer) technique of sculpture that had died out since the Nara Period, the creation of works of sculpture with a finishing technique of gold lacquer decoration has been in progress with an eye toward entry in international exhibitions. Past works have obtained high praise at international exhibitions for outstanding originality that expands the range of expression of "lacquer," the representative Japanese craftsmanship material that is known overseas as japanning. Between 2006 and 2013, these works were displayed in overseas exhibitions in Spain, Canada, Taiwan, and New York. As a member of a Japanese arts organization, Jiyu Bijutsu, works have been submitted to its public annual exhibition every year. The author has received such awards as the Outstanding Work Award in 2009 and the Japan Sculpture Art Gallery's Encouragement Award in 2010 from "Jiyu Bijutsu Arts Exhibition"; the Chairman's Award in 2006, and the Forestry Agency Director General's Award in 2010 from "the Beauty of URUSHI" held by Japan URUSHI Arts and Crafts Association.
