Description
Microcredit is well known as one of the most effective instruments to reduce poverty, and its long-lived development movement has spread globally, not only in the developing countries but in the developed ones. In Spain, almost all of the financial institutions have already introduced microcredit, and they have implemented small loans without collateral to customers who were previously excluded from the formal credit system. The financial institutions in Spain are supposed to contribute a part of their profit for social activities, and microcredit is likely to be considered as one of them. This report, based on my fieldwork carried out in March 2009, first provides a general overview of microcredit in Spain. Then, it describes the success stories brought by two women, and indicates these stories are rather rare cases and microcredit conducted in Spain is in a particular situation. Moreover, it suggests microcredit does not function very well. Finally, it discusses whether microcredit in Spain is a means or an end.
