Abstract

This is the fourth of the serial papers on the analyses and organizations of polysemous Japanese basic verbs. The verbs treated in this paper are as follows : nagareru (flow), nagasu (causative of nagareru), narau (learn), nuu (thread), and nuku (pull out). The basic tenet of the semantic analysis and description is cognitive semantics. Along with the analyses presented here, the author has been able to improve on his ideas on cognitive semantics. The concept of 'phenomeneme' which he has proposed several years ago has been proved to be effective in the analysis of polysemous words as the analyses proceeded with more words. He has proposed in this paper a new concept of 'cognitive case' which is independent of a semantic case which was proposed in the case grammar. The series of paper also attempt to argue for the principle that cognition precedes the creation of linguistic meaning.
