This study examines issues related to the differences in the two types of interrogative sentences–yes/no and positive/negative types–in modern Chinese language used in Chinese TV drama. Generally speaking, the modern Chinese language has five types of interrogative sentences types: yes/no, positive/negative, wh-, disjunctive, and ones with ne. In many previous studies, yes/no and positive/negative interrogative sentence types were considered synonymously varying with each other. However, there is no much meaning difference between the two. Further, positive/negative type was not considered a polite interrogative sentence. I agree with researchers’ view on positive/negative interrogative sentence types; however, I think we need to consider the differences in the hierarchical relationship levels of the speaker and hearer. This study aims to investigate the differences in the two types of interrogative sentences–yes/no and positive/negative from the view point of the speaker–hearer relationship. Results of this study indicate that the speakers in Chinese TV dramas use positive/negative interrogative sentences when they have to use it in the context of a hierarchical relationship. Therefore, this interrogative sentence type is inappropriate when communicating with your boss, except in cases wherein you have an intimate relationship with him/her.
