The purpose of this paper is to examine the semantic mechanisms of interpreting unselected objects in the change event, in particular, as realized in the resultative construction and the caused motion construction. Three types of verbs, namely result verbs, transitive unergative verbs, and intransitive unergative verbs, are involved in the relevant constructions, and it is shown that each type of verb tends to interact with different types of information provided by world knowledge as specified in qualia structure of relevant lexical items and by contextual information given online. Specifically, the unselected object with result verbs is mainly interpreted via part-whole structure specified in world knowledge of the ‘original’ object while the interpretation of the unselected object with unergative verbs significantly relies on contextual information, allowing more innovative, if not productive, ‘one-shot’ instances. Some related constructional idioms are also discussed.
