This paper is intended to clarify the educational thought of Manshi Kiyosawa (1863~1903), one of the most prominent Buddhists in Meiji Japan. His faith in Buddhism and his experience of teaching in middle schools and colleges helped Kiyosawa to form unique educational thought, standing against the educational ideal of Tenno System represented in the Imperial Rescript on Education. He asserted that pupils must face the actual phases of life for the purpose of overcoming the false consciousness of Tenno System and finding the true meaning of life, and for the same purpose, he advocated "kaihatsu-kyoju" (the developmental method of teaching). He, also, supported the freedom of teaching from the standpoint of spiritual freedom attained through his faith in Buddhism. In short, his educational thought can be characterized as supernationalism, pacifism and anti-patriarchism, none of which his contemporary thinkers could share with him.
