Abstract

application/pdf

In this paper, I will deal with Honma Hisao's Eikoku kinsei yuibishugi no kenkyū (A Study of the Aesthetic Movement in Modern England), which was completed in 1934. Honma Hisao was a lecturer at Waseda University at the same time as a successful journalist and literary critic during the Taishō Era. I will review the content and examine the process through which this book was completed. How did Honma take interest in the theme? How long did it take Honma to complete the work? In what order did he write it? In what way was Honma's stay in England in 1928 help complete the book? After discussing these questions, I will consider what caused Honma to turn to Meiji literature after he published the book. Through this process, I hope to clarity the roles of Honma's two masters, Tsubouchi Shōyō and Shimamura Hōgetsu in the writing of A Study of the Aesthetic Movement in Modern England as well as the change of time from late Meiji, to early Shōwa.
