This paper studies Book VI and Book X of Aristotle's Ethica Nichomachea with respect to virtues of intellect and the ultimate virtuous activities that man is capable of actualizing in his life of actions. It focuses on the role of practical wisdom in guiding the life of actions toward its ultimate and highest good, and on contemplative activity which belongs to the holiest of all activities. Aristotle's eudaimonia as the fi rst principle of the life of actions is identifi ed with the fi rst principle of man as a rational potency as presented in Book IX of his Metaphysica, which is to fully actualize this potency through the exercise of free will that chooses between opposing effects.
