Description
In order to investigate a conversion percentage of fracture energy into plastic deformation energy in compression process, an experimental study was carried out by using rod specimen made of six kinds of mineral under the loading rate of 0.3 ton/min. The nominal dimensions of rod specimen were 2.0 cm in diameter and 4.0 cm in height. Compression tests were performed by universal testing machine. A longitudinal deformation of rod was measured by the combined use of the strain gage and the differential transformer. However, the strain gage method was mainly employed in an adjustment of this experiments. Experimental results are summarized as follows : 1) It was found that conversion percentages of fracture energy into plastic deformation energy in the neighborhood of the central portion of the rod specimen were about 28% in marble, about 30% in gypsum and about 32% in talc. 2) Load-deformation hysteresis curves in the case of quartz, feldspar and limestone rods approximately show the elastic hysteresis curve, on the other hand, in the case of marble, gypsum and talc rods, these show the plastic hysteresis curve. 3) Comparing the deformation measured by using the strain gage with those measured by using the differential transformer, the latter was much greater than the former because of the end effect of specimen.
