The bedded manganese ore deposits of Tamaji Mine occur in the montmorillonitized tuff breccia of middle miocene age. The manganese minerals of the ore (so-called "Oiran Mangan") mainly consist of pyrolusite with a small quantity of manganite and rhodochrosite. The manganite in the upper zones altered to pyrolusite by weathering.
