A numerical study was conducted for the distribution of the gas flow rate in a packed bed of spherical particles. Radial distribution of voidage in a packed bed, which was an important factor for nonuniform gas flow, was expressed as an empirical equation using the ratio of bed diameter, D, to particle diameter, d. Gas flow rate in a packed bed and in a free board was simulated under the calculated conditions of various D/d ratios and particle Reynolds numbers. Computed results compared favorably with the available experimental data. These results revealed that the maldistribution of gas flow near a wall increased significantly with a decrease in the D/d ratio and caused reduction in the averaged Nusselt number.
