Abstract

type:Article
This paper is an attempt to present a syntactic approach to the causative/inchoative alternation in Japanese within the framework of Distributed Morphology (Marantz (1997, 2001)) and its decompositional view on verbal morphologies. Specifically, I argue that the behavior of intransitives in Japanese can be easily predicted from the morphosyntax of specific affixes such as, ar, contrary to what has been assumed since Kageyama's (1996) seminal work, namely that the causative/inchoative alternation in Japanese is best analyzed in semantic terms. In particular, I first give a critical review of the rule of de-causativization on the semantic representation in the sense of Kageyama (1996), and show that it cannot be valid in theoretical as well as empirical respects. In the second half of this paper, I show that the analysis I propose for ar-intransitives is superior in that it can correctly predict basic syntactic and semantic properties of the verb class in question, including those which would be quite mysterious under any semantic theory, without any additional stipulations. If this paper is on the right track, the agglutinative aspect of the verbal morphology in Japanese will be reduced, essentially, to the interaction between different functional heads available in the v-system of the language.
