Abstract

An extensive reading (ER) program usinggraded readers was introduced in Shiga Universityin the spring semester of 2011, and a websitecalled ‘Moodlereader’ was used to monitor andtest students’ progress.This article is divided into three parts. In Part1, Extensive Reading will be explained and theliterature, which recommends it for EFL (Englishas a Foreign Language) learners, will be looked at. In Part 2, how the program was set up and run, at Shiga University, will be described.In Part 3, based on classroom surveys taken before and after the reading program, students’ prior experience in reading and opinions of the program will be discussed. Using data from the Moodlereader website, their performances in the first semester will be evaluated. Conclusions will be drawn and recommendations for future use of ER will be made. A list of students’ favorite books will be added in an appendix.
